Summer Beauty Essentials

I know summer is winding down in much of the country, but despite a somewhat dreary holiday weekend here in Seattle, I firmly maintain that the season isn’t quite over. And Julia tells me that temperatures in Helena are still in the 90s, which definitely qualifies as summer weather. Sorry, autumn, you’re going to have to wait!

These are some of the beauty products I’ve been obsessing over this summer (and will steadfastly continue to use for the next several weeks, or as long as it takes for me to admit that fall is upon us)…

Summer Beauty Essentials

1) Bobbi Brown Bronzing Powder

I first tried this bronzer in college, and it’s been in my daily rotation ever since. Unlike a lot of bronzers, it’s shimmer-free, so you never look shiny—just a naturally bronzed, sun-goddess version of yourself. Use a little to look like you just enjoyed a long lunch on a sunny patio, or layer on a bit more to look like you just returned from a week in Fiji.

2) MoroccanOil Frizz Control

This spray fights static and tames summertime-induced frizz, keeping your hair sleek and smooth even in the harshest humidity. It may not get that humid here in Seattle, but I’ve tested this out in the tropics and the Midwest, and this stuff is up to any challenge! Jules, you should test drive this spray in a Southern climate to really make sure it can handle anything.

3) Dr. Jart+ Water Fuse Beauty Balm

I insist on foundation during the work week, but if I’m spending the day outside, I’ll opt for Dr. Jart+ instead. This tinted moisturizer/sunscreen hybrid leaves your skin looking dewy and natural, and since it’s water-based, it feels like you’re wearing nothing at all (but makes your skin look so much better than if you were actually wearing nothing at all).

4) Essie Nail Polish in Hip-anema

This vibrant, sizzling orange-red polish is a summer staple. The shade complements a tan like nobody’s business, but looks fantastic on fairer complexions, too. This is the color I bring to the nail salon nine times out of ten until September ends.

5) Australian Gold Continuous Spray Sunscreen with Bronzer

I discovered this sunscreen completely by accident. In fact, I didn’t even realize it had bronzer in it until after using it a few times—I just decided my skin looked irrationally glowy and fantastic, shrugged it off, and went on my way. As an added bonus, it smells a bit like cinnamon rolls. Trust me on this one—it’ll make you look forward to putting sunscreen on.

6) Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel

I don’t know about you guys, but when the mercury rises, my combination skin veers towards the oily side of the spectrum. Enter this lightweight, oil-free moisturizer from Clinique. It absorbs quickly, leaving skin soft and smooth without ever being greasy.

7) Buxom Blush in Breathless

Don’t let the bright, almost-neon shade scare you off—this blush is amazing. It sweeps on as a subtle coral, giving your skin a natural, lit-up-from-within glow that my face has never managed to replicate when left to its own devices.

8) Diorshow Waterproof Mascara

I’m a diehard advocate of waterproof mascara no matter the season, but it’s especially necessary during the summer when heat, humidity and beach days are regular factors. Well, bring it on, summer–this mascara won’t run!

9) Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment in Cherry

I’m a Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment junkie–I’ve got it in five shades–but this sheer, vibrant red is my go-to lip color for the summer months. It has SPF 15 and greater staying power than any other lip balm I’ve tried.

10) NARS Eyeshadow Duo in Kalahari

These rich, shimmery cocoa hues are an indispensable addition to my summer makeup stash. With these in your arsenal, the perfect summer smoky eye—softer and warmer than a standard smoky eye, but still smoldering—is easily attainable.

What are some of your favorite beauty products for summer? I’d love to know!

  1. Oh yes that Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment in Cherry never leaves my side, ever ever. So good. And the color/nice moisture lasts a surprisingly long amount of time.

    Loving the new blog, ladies!!
