Beauty Buzzwords: Gel Cream

Beauty Buzzwords: Gel Cream

Much like your wardrobe, it makes sense for your skincare routine to undergo seasonal updates. The rich moisturizer you swear by in the winter months is just too heavy for summer; you need something that can hydrate while dealing with excess oil and the accompanying random breakouts (ah, the price we pay for this glorious weather)! Enter gel cream, the best thing to happen to your face since you discovered the concealer in your mom’s medicine cabinet back in seventh grade.

Gel cream combines the refreshing, lightweight consistency of a gel with the moisturizing properties of a cream, creating a genius hybrid product that’s perfect for summer (or if you have oily skin, perfect for any time of year). It absorbs easily, and feels super refreshing after hours spent in the sun. Gel cream comes in many forms, so whether it’s an everyday moisturizer or a deeply hydrating BB cream, there’s one out there that’s a perfect fit for your face.

Chanel Hydra Beauty Gel Creme is an excellent daily moisturizer for normal or combination skin types; this lightweight cream is infused with powerful antioxidants designed to boost moisture retention. It feels cool and refreshing – and it’s especially soothing if you keep it in the fridge! Bobbi Brown Hydrating Gel Cream is similarly lightweight and absorbs very quickly, leaving skin refreshed and prepped for flawless makeup application.

AMOREPACIFIC Moisture Bound Hydrating Gel is my personal favorite. It does wonders for dry complexions in the summer months when your skin may be oilier than usual, but you still desperately need hydration. It’s somehow light and rich at the same time, and it smells like pure luxury (though the scent may be too much if you’re sensitive to such things).

On the other end of the spectrum, Korres Pomegranate Balancing Cream-Gel is a godsend if you have oily skin or live in a humid climate (or both). Pomegranate extract acts as a pore-minimizing astringent; salicylic acid protects against breakouts while hyaluronic acid smooths and conditions your skin. This gel will also mattify your complexion, leaving you totally hydrated but shine-free.

bareMinerals Complexion Rescue is a recent but much-loved addition to the gel cream club. This tinted moisturizer provides sheer, radiant coverage while replenishing skin with electrolytes and marine botanicals, and over time, it even improves skin texture. It’s free of silicone, oil, and fragrance, making it perfect for sensitive skin. As an added bonus, it’s got SPF 30, so no worries if you forget the sunscreen in the morning.

I haven’t tried this one (actually, I hadn’t even heard of this brand!) but judging by the reviews, Hada Labo Tokyo Skin Plumping Gel Cream is amazing. This serum-infused gel cream contains the highest concentration of hyaluronic acid for maximum hydration, along with collagen to reduce fine lines and ceramide to strengthen the skin’s moisture barrier. The consensus seems to be that it works best as a night cream, leaving your skin soft, smooth, and incredibly youthful. It’s going on my list!

Are you a fan of gel cream? Do you have a favorite?
