Weekend Adventures: Fremont Solstice Fair

Fremont Solstice Fair 2015

This weekend Jules and I headed to the Fremont Solstice Fair, an annual bohemian celebration marking the beginning of summer in Seattle. Featuring musical performers, local artists, and a free-spirited parade, the fair is probably best known for the Solstice Cyclists, a group of naked bikers who paint themselves and ride through the streets of Fremont in the buff. (Sorry, no pics of the naked bike riding!) The parade was a lot of fun; there were some very impressive children on stilts, a marching band playing Macklemore, and the biggest beach ball I’ve ever seen…

Apart from the parade, one of our favorite parts of the fair was the Art Car Blowout, an exhibition of fantastically (and in some cases, hilariously) decorated cars. Jules loved the Gnome Wagon, while I was partial to the flamingos.

Jules is a longtime fan of the Solstice Fair, and this year was my first time. I’m glad I finally got to experience this quintessential Seattle event! Have you been to the Solstice Fair? Would you ever participate in the naked bike ride? (My answer would have to be a resounding no, but rock on, Solstice Cyclists!) Also, I hear there’s a Dog Parade on Sunday – Jules, you should start planning next year’s doggie costumes now…

Weekend Adventures: Olympic National Park

moss (1)

This weekend, Nick and I went camping in Olympic National Park, close to Washington’s coast. After a couple weeks of nonstop hustling, it felt so good to disconnect from everything: work, technology, chores. The weather was perfect and the scenery was gorgeous. I thought it’d be fun to share some pictures from our trip. If you’re ever in the area, the Olympics are a must stop.

rain forest trail (1)

We were situated right in the middle of the Quinault Rainforest, which I had never been to before. I originally thought we were going to be in the Hoh Rainforest, which is further north. On Saturday, we took a long hike starting with this trail. Apparently we missed seeing a black bear by a 1/2 mile. Thank goodness we missed it. I probably would have hyperventilated and done everything you’re not supposed to do.

tree

The old-growth trees were incredible. I loved trying to identify the trees by their bark. I’m a nerd, but that should be no surprise by now.

Hanging out in Falls Creek with the doggies. Saturday’s 8-mile hike wore them out.

The best part of the trip was hanging out lakeside, soaking in the sun and reading our books.

On the way home we drove out to Pacific Beach State Park. Even in the afternoon, the fog was so thick it was hard to see the water’s edge.

Do you ever take camping trips or are you more of a city traveler? I used to always gravitate towards exploring cities, but as I’ve gotten older I’ve found that camping and exploring rural areas is more relaxing to me.

Weekend Adventures: Skagit Valley Tulip Festival

Weekend Adventures: Skagit Valley Tulip Festival

Yesterday Jules and I hit the road with our friend Sarah and headed up to Mount Vernon for one of my favorite springtime traditions, the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival! Mount Vernon is about an hour and a half north of Seattle, so it was the perfect excuse to pile into the car for a mini road trip (and of course do some outlet shopping on the way home). The Tulip Festival at its peak is absolutely breathtaking – sweeping, gorgeous vistas of tulips in explosive technicolor stretching out in every direction. We went at the tail end of the festival (the tulips bloomed early this year), but obviously there was still plenty of loveliness to be seen. Several farms participate in the festival; we chose Roozengaarde, which features beautifully landscaped gardens in addition to the sprawling fields of flowers.

Guys, this photo isn’t even touched up. The flowers are THAT STUNNING.

Have you been to the Tulip Festival? If you’re visiting the Pacific Northwest in April, it definitely deserves a spot on your itinerary. (If you’re a local and you’ve never been…get on it, girl!)

Weekend Adventures: Nordstrom Spring Beauty Trend Show

It’s the most wonderful time of the year…time for the Nordstrom Spring Beauty Trend Show! Early Saturday morning, Jules and I met up with a couple of friends at the Bellevue Nordstrom, excited to hear experts from top beauty brands dish about the hottest trends for spring. (We were also excited to win some free swag in one of the many raffles, but alas, luck was not on our side…)

Nordstrom Spring Beauty Trend Show speakers included Kate Somerville and Julep founder Jane Park

The event began with a runway show featuring the latest looks for spring; we saw presentations from Tom Ford, NARS, Clarisonic, M.A.C., SK-II, Smashbox, Kiehl’s, and many more. Two of the guest speakers headlining the show were skincare guru Kate Somerville and Julep founder & CEO Jane Park. We heard that this year’s Spring Trend Show was the biggest event ever hosted at any Nordstrom store!

After the runway show, we headed downstairs for complimentary Clarisonic facials, makeovers at the NARS counter, and manicures from the talented nail artists at Julep.

The indisputable highlight of the event was meeting Jane Park, who happily posed for pictures with our group and spent several minutes with us gushing about favorite lipsticks and nail colors. As a hugely successful female entrepreneur and CEO of a beauty company that I adore, she’s a major role model for me. It was such a thrill to meet her in person; they say it’s risky to meet your idols, but Jane was so sweet and down to earth. She seemed just as excited to be there as we were!

As always, the Nordstrom Beauty Trend Show was totally worth the 6 am wake up call (despite our lack of winning raffle tickets). We had a fabulous time and I’m already looking forward to the fall show!
