Friday Favorites

Happy Friday! How was your week? Mine has been crazy busy, but we had a mini heat wave a few days ago, so I dropped everything and made a beeline for the beach after work. It was glorious. Apart from that, things have been pretty nonstop. I’m really looking forward to relaxing this weekend and having my mom over for brunch on Mother’s Day. Mimosas and scones are the greatest gift of all, right? (Just kidding, Mom!) What are your plans for the weekend? As you count down the hours to sweet freedom, please enjoy a few of my favorite links from this week.

2. A French company in Dubai has opened a pop-up nap bar, where you can curl up amidst luxury pillows and relax in style. And oh yeah, it’s free. Happy hour indeed!

3. These 15 wine slushies are making me look forward to summer even more than I usually do. Bring on the sangria sno cones!

4. One Kickstarter campaign is taking the “woman card” to the next level – by creating a full deck featuring badass ladies like Sally Ride, Rosa Parks, and Beyoncé.

5. This guide to selecting a brunch outfit according to your hangover made me laugh. Brunch will not be denied!

What We’re Reading

Winter is a great time to catch up on pleasure reading, am I right? It’s so chilly and dark outside that you don’t feel guilty about staying in with a good book. (Though to be fair, Seattle has been enjoying some unnaturally lovely weather the past couple of days. It’s unsettling.) Either way, Jules and I have resolved to step up our reading game this year, so it’s about time for an installment of What We’re Reading! These five titles are currently at the top of our reading list.

What We're Reading

1. Career of Evil is the third installment in Robert Galbraith’s (aka J.K. Rowling’s) series of darkly captivating mystery novels, and Jules can’t put it down. If gruesome thrillers are your thing, check this one out!

2. I’m as far from outdoorsy as it is possible to be, but one of my favorite genres is adventure/survival nonfiction (go figure). Endurance is the brutal story of Ernest Shackleton’s ill-fated Antarctic expedition in 1915. It’s extremely satisfying to read this while you’re sitting by a warm fire.

3. Roxane Gay delves into the complexities of modern feminism through a lens of pop culture and politics in Bad Feminist, a smartly written, hilarious, and endearingly relatable collection of essays.

4. We’re a little late to the game on this one, but my book club is finally reading All the Light We Cannot See, Anthony Doerr’s Pulitzer Prize winning-novel set in occupied France during World War II. Doerr’s Four Seasons in Rome is one of my favorites, so I’m looking forward to reading some of his other work.

5. Both Jules and I are anxious to read When Breath Becomes Air, the much-lauded memoir of a young neurosurgeon diagnosed with terminal cancer. Part stoic introspection, part scientific reflection on mortality, this book is sure to be a tearjerker.

Have you read any good books lately? I’m flying out to Ohio tomorrow for my friend Emie’s 30th birthday bash, and I still need to figure out what to download on my Nook for the trip. I really want to read #5 on the plane, but not sure I should attempt it in public…any other recommendations?

Friday Favorites

Happy Friday, you guys! What’s going on this weekend? Jules has selflessly volunteered to help me pack up my apartment, and after we tire of that, we’ll probably take a break to enjoy the Bellevue Arts Fair. There’s always some amazing stuff to see (last year’s highlight was a giant iron moose), and hopefully I’ll get a few ideas for decorating my new place. Don’t worry, the giant moose will not be involved. Now let’s kick off the weekend with a few fun links!

Friday Favorites

1. Has anyone heard of Illumask? Apparently this weird stormtrooper-esque mask uses light therapy to clear up acne-causing bacteria in your skin. One rave review has me intrigued! (The Golden Girl)

2. These tips for taking blog photos are super handy. The focus is on composition and styling rather than technical stuff – helpful for everyone, whether you’re working with an iPhone or a fancy camera. (Ghost Parties)

3. See what $1,500 in rent looks like around the world. In Cairo, it’ll get you a sweet view of the pyramids. (BuzzFeed)

4. Even though I live alone, I think this guide to decorating a home with your significant other is really interesting. Now someone just needs to write a guide titled “How to Convince Him He Doesn’t Need Any Closet Space.” (A Beautiful Mess)

5. Who else is watching UnREAL? Jules and I are hooked. If you love the Bachelor (or love to hate it), you’ll enjoy this look at what happens behind the scenes of a “reality” dating show. It’s dark, twisted and totally entertaining. Anyway! This interview with one of the show’s creators poses an interesting question: can we be feminists and still love The Bachelor? (Elle)

Have a fabulous weekend!
