Friday Favorites

Welcome back Friday! How I’ve missed you! This weekend we’re moving into our new apartment in Durham. Long lost clothes will be recovered, furniture will be assembled, and copious amounts of pizza will inevitably be consumed. I’m super bummed because the way our move is shaking out, it looks like I may not be able to watch the Oscars. We sold our TV when we moved to North Carolina, so I’ll be dependent on updates from Mil and social media. Are you watching this weekend? Whatever you end up doing, have a great time and enjoy this week’s round-up of favorites.

Friday Favorites Weekly Blog Round-up South by Northwest.
1. I’m all about the budget buys (who isn’t?). I’m loving several of the Old Navy picks on Glitter Guide’s list of affordable buys for February.
.
2. These silly Olaf cookies made me laugh. This DIY from Handmade Charlotte is a good reminder that a fun cookie project doesn’t have to be hard.
.
3. Authenticity online is something I think about a lot as I post here and on social media. Brittany, from A Healthy Slice of Life, shared some candid thoughts on the topic this week.
.
4. Tassels are just so much fun! I’m pretty excited that they’re in style this season. Anna James’ style guide post on Lauren Conrad is going to be my go-to resource for ways to incorporate them into my wardrobe.
.
5. February is Black History Month. While we all know about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks, there are so many modern civil rights activists who continue to drive progress forward. If you have some time, I encourage you to watch The Interrupters, a documentary highlighting the work of Ameena Matthews and others to end youth violence in Chicago.

Friday Favorites

This Friday marks the end of a long and rainy week in Seattle. While I’m glad we missed out on #Jonas2016, sometimes I do wish that every once and a while our rain would turn into snow. This weekend I’m throwing it back to my college days with some karaoke at an old favorite dive. A favorite mostly because they never bothered to check my ID back in the day. Hope your weekend is filled with as many power ballads as mine and enjoy this week’s roundup of favorites from across the web.

1. Tina of Just a Tina Bit always has the best shoes. This relaxed Valentines Day outfit features the red lace-up flats of my dreams. The only caveat? They apparently need some breaking in.
.
2. This new story about a cheese heist made me giggle.
.
3. I love seeing The Everygirl diversify their career profiles with a feature on Neonatalist and UCLA clinical professor Valencia Walker. She is one smart and badass b*tch.
.
4. Is it just me or are mascara marketing terms confusing? Plumping, voluminous, lengthening, fanning…which one do I need? Because it sounds like I need them all! This week, The Blonde Salad came to my rescue with a guide on how to pick the right mascara for your lashes.
.
5. Next weekend, Teach for America will mark its 25th anniversary with a summit of alumni and corps members in DC. As a former corps member, I’m looking forward to reconnecting with colleagues and engaging in discussion around pushing education and income equality forward. Bonus: Janelle Monáe is the headliner for the main event.

Friday Favorites

Fourth of July weekend always brings back strong memories for me. Growing up, we used to light off fireworks in our backyard; this is of course before it became illegal. I remember the thrill of running away as fast as possible after the fuse was lit. Once I reached middle school, we started going to Bellevue Park for an afternoon of activities, music, and “big boy” fireworks. A more recent and favorite memory is from two years ago when we spent the night with my sister-in-law and her husband waiting for the birth of my nephew. My personal theory is that he was waiting for the appropriate amount of fanfare to announce his entrance into the world. I’m awful with birthdays, but his is one I’ll proudly never forget.

If you’re stateside, have a great holiday weekend. If you’re from across the pond feel free to celebrate the fact that our independence freed you from all the American political drama! Anyway, here are a few of my favorite links from the week:

FF7.3.2015….

1. I no longer understand the best way to invite people to party or BBQ. Facebook event? Email? Evite? Mailed invitation for fancier affairs? Thank goodness for The Kitchn’s guidance.
..
2. How do you part your hair? For most of my life I’m had a moderate side part, but recently my stylist told me I should give the center part a try. I’m not totally onboard yet, but am getting there. Want to know how you should really be parting your hair? Here are some tips.
..
3. Speaking of hair, nearly 2% of Americans have Alopecia, an autoimmune disorder that causes one’s hair to fall out. Icelandic photographer Sigga Ella recently came out with a new series featuring portraits of women with the disease, their heads all bald. The women are simply stunning.
..
4. Princess Diana would have turned 54 yesterday. I still remember where I was when she died. Do you? Take a look back at some of her most iconic moments.

5. An intellectual discussion of the politics of Magic Mike and roadstripping. I’m totally going to see this movie for its strong feminist statement and not Channing Tatum’s abs…

XOXO,
Jules

P.S. I just realized that none of my pics were holiday themed. So here’s a mystery bonus link.
