March Wish List

Guys, spring is so close I can practically taste it. The sun has been peeking out for a little bit longer here and there, and I’ve even dared to venture outside without a coat. Yep, I’m a daredevil. I just can’t wait for warmer temperatures and the cute outfits that come with it! I’m daydreaming of slouchy stripes, leopard accents, and pops of pink. Oh, and plenty of fresh flowers, of course!

The Beauty Brief

The Beauty Brief

Hello there, beauty lovers! It’s been way too long since our last edition of the Beauty Brief, which means I’ve got a vast backlog of products to share with you guys. I’m planning to make this a monthly series again from now on, so strap in and prepare yourselves for plenty of glossy beauty goodness. This month, I’m giving you the scoop on two new finds and one old favorite.

The Beauty Brief // Tata Harper Hydrating Floral Essence

This was my first foray into Tata Harper’s all-natural, non-toxic skincare line, and her Hydrating Floral Essence did not disappoint. (Side note: anything with the word “essence” in it sounds mysterious enough to be completely magical, don’t you think?) This nutrient-dense spray is technically a moisturizing toner, but I’ve been using it as a midday makeup refresher. A spritz or two will hydrate your skin and leave you with a lovely, dewy glow. In fact, after using this stuff for the first time, I was immediately told by a stranger that I had “Bambi skin.” Make of that what you will!

The Beauty Brief // bareMinerals Power Neutrals Eyeshadow Palette

As part of my New Year’s resolution to shake up my beauty routine, I thought a new eyeshadow palette was in order. (Sorry, Naked 3!) Though a bit more subdued than the shimmery golden and bronze shades I normally reach for, the bareMinerals Power Neutrals palette is subtle and sophisticated and just what I needed for every day at the office. Plus, the colors have names like “Boss Lady” and “Schmooze,” which I find delightful.

The Beauty Brief // Benefit Instant Brow Pencil

Despite years of over-plucking in high school, the feature I consistently receive the most compliments on is my eyebrows…ha! Meet the secret to my success, Benefit Instant Brow Pencil. Not only is the medium shade the most perfect match for my coloring I’ve ever found, but the pencil itself is very soft, which allows for precision without making your brows look razor-sharp. Pro tip: after blending with the spoolie end, I like to soften the perimeters of my brows with a Q-tip for an even more natural look.

The Beauty Brief

The Beauty Brief

As we head towards what is sure to be a dark and desolate winter, I like to treat myself to some extra pampering in the form of new beauty products. I’m especially conscious of skincare at this time of year, and my favorite products right now are the ones that keep my skin fresh, hydrated, and glowing. Here are a few of the items I’ve added into my routine this month.

Julep Restorative Facial Milk

Despite its ridiculous name, Julep’s Restorative Facial Milk is probably my #1 favorite new product right now. This creamy blend of five luscious oils is rich, light, and absorbs astonishingly fast. A great option for anyone who feels reluctant about face oils in general, it leaves absolutely zero residue and feels like nothing is on your face. My skin is on the dry side, so I like to apply it as a serum under my moisturizer before I go to bed.

Lush Cup o' Coffee Face and Body Mask

If you ever run out of coffee in the morning, just take a whiff of this stuff. You’ll be fully alert in seconds. Better yet, slather it all over yourself! It’s like getting slapped in the face with caffeine (in a good way, obvi). Sadly, I shower at night, so its invigorating properties are sort of wasted on me – and you really should use this in the shower rather than over the sink, as it makes a huge mess when you rinse it off. Although Cup O’ Coffee is technically a mask, it makes a fantastic scrub, too – it will leave your skin super soft, smooth, and brighter than before. And unlike many Lush masks, it’s not perishable, so you don’t have to rush to use it all quickly.

Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector

I read a glowing review of Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector awhile ago, and have been dying to get my hands on it – or rather, get it on my face – ever since. It does not disappoint! This is truly one of the most natural-looking, beautiful luminizers I have ever come across. Just a tiny little drop blended across your cheekbones, brow bones, and the bridge of your nose will give you a gorgeous ethereal glow. It comes in several shades, but I love Moonstone, a lovely pale gold. Word to the wise: the pump dispenses way too much product, so you may want to unscrew the top and dab a little bit on your finger.

Have you tried any of these? What beauty products are you loving lately? Share your faves in the comments!

2 Easy Makeup Looks for Halloween

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays of the year. I love seasonal candy and I love wigs, what can I say? This year, I’m not sure what I’m going to do. For the past four years, Nick and I have gone to my friend Misti’s over-the-top Halloween bash in Arkansas, but we have yet to find our “thing” in Seattle. Whatever we end up doing, I’m looking forward to an excuse to buy a new wig and potentially try out a new look.

As a minimalist kind of girl, I’m usually resistant to elaborate make-up looks. Contouring is straight up too much for me to worry about on a daily basis. However, Halloween is the one time of the year I fully embrace over the top make-up. If you’re having a hard time coming up with a good costume, look to your make-up drawer for an affordable and easy costume.

Over the past few years, I’ve found myself returning to the two favorite Halloween looks I’m sharing today: a Day of the Dead sugar skull and a deer (doe?). I love these looks for a couple reasons: 1) They are actual disguises. Halloween make-up should transform you into someone or something 2) They are both still pretty and feminine, as opposed to gory (no Walking Dead level gore for this girl, sorry Mil). 3) They’re easy options that require very little investment, but still look pretty impressive. Halloween can get expensive y’all.

To create a Day of the Dead look, I recommend following this tutorial by Shonagh Scott. You’ll need a few Halloween specific make-up supplies: white and black face paint, a bright face paint color, and optionally some small jewels. The best part about this look is its flexibility, you can really pair it with any outfit you want. If you have a Mexican style skirt or dress, perfect. Want to throw on a LBD and call it a day, that’s perfect too.

To create this deer look, follow this tutorial by Cheap Frills and Thrills. You’ll need the same white face paint, but beyond that everything else probably already lives in your makeup bag. Shannon recommends using fake eyelashes, but I didn’t find it necessary. As far as the outfit pairing goes, any earth-tone combo should do the trick. A fringed brown suede jacket would be particularly cute.

What are you doing for Halloween this year? Are you getting dressed up, taking the kid(s) tricking-or-treating, or holding it down on the couch with a scary movie marathon?
.
XOXO,
Jules
