Summer To-Do List

What's on your summer to-do list?

When summer arrives in Seattle, it puts everyone in a good mood. We may deal with perma-drizzle and grey skies the rest of the year, but our summers are pure bliss. For that reason and so many others, this time of year has always been my favorite. Besides sitting outside and soaking up the sunshine for the next three months straight (which sounds like a pretty solid plan, actually), here are a few of the things I can’t wait to do this season.

1. Wear bold, vibrant lip colors. NARS Heat Wave, how I’ve missed you!

2. Find the perfect little white sundress

3. Make rosé slushies

4. Get my Shark Week fix, perhaps with some themed snacks

5. Take off on a weekend road trip

6. Dine al fresco as much as possible (rooftop deck at Terra Plata, I’m coming for you!)

7. Read a book (or four) on the beach

8. Attend the Bite of Seattle (Jules and I missed it last year because we were meeting Emily Schuman! Worth it.)

9. Master the art of self-tanning (has anyone tried these?)

10. Get in the water. Lake, pool, backyard sprinklers…it’s all good!

Get wet!

Obviously there’s so much more (making s’mores, watching the fireworks on the 4th of July…) but these are just some of the highlights.

What are you looking forward to this season? Do you have any special summer traditions?

What We’re Reading: The Beach Edition

Four books we can't wait to read on the beach this summer

‘Tis the season to lounge on the beach, binge-reading to your heart’s content! From modern chick lit to engrossing psychological thrillers, there are a ton of titles calling my name right now. Here are four books I can’t wait to read this summer.

1. An insightful look at the highs and lows of a complex, decades-long friendship, Rich and Pretty follows two childhood best friends in New York City who are struggling to maintain their bond as they enter their thirties and life pulls them in different directions.

2. Described as an “unholy hybrid of Beaches and The Exorcist” and a “heartwarming tale of friendship and demonic possession,” My Best Friend’s Exorcism won me over immediately based on the back cover alone. High school drama, dark humor, and supernatural thrills make an excellent combo!

3. I know, I know, The Girls is on everybody’s summer must-read list. But I started it yesterday, and just as the Manson-like cult in the book seduces 14-year-old Evie, Emma Cline’s debut novel is totally reeling me in.

4. Teo Avelar is not your average medical student. For one thing, his only friend is a cadaver. And when he falls in love with Clarice, Teo kidnaps her and embarks on a road trip across Brazil in a misguided (and terrifying) effort to convince her they belong together. Part macabre thriller, part demented love story, Perfect Days sounds utterly compelling.

What’s on your reading list this summer? Any suggestions for a great beach book? I’d love to hear your recommendations!

10 Summer Wardrobe Staples

Happy first day of summer, y’all! Summer is the best for so many reasons, one of them being that it’s by far the easiest season to dress for. Any given outfit really only requires a few key pieces. For instance, a pretty sundress + gladiator sandals + sunnies = blammo, instant perfection! What could be simpler? Here are 10 wardrobe staples that will make getting dressed a total breeze all summer long.

1. A little white dress, the summertime version of the LBD. Preferably a lacy one!

2. Nude wedge sandals go with literally everything and make your legs look a million miles long.

3. A killer sun hat will instantly put you in a summer state of mind.

4. Breathable linen shorts are a no-brainer.

5. An off-the-shoulder top, because I’m pretty sure it’s the law this season.

6. A stylish beach tote to hold all your summer essentials.

7. Giant, glamorous sunglasses. The bigger the better.

8. Super sexy white jeans (just don’t leave home without a Tide stick).

9. Some classic espadrilles. I love this striped pair!

10. A maxi dress that you can wear everywhere from the beach to the bar.

I’m still in search of the perfect LWD. What are your go-to pieces this summer?

Beach Bag Bonanza

I may only have three pairs of jeans (all virtually identical), but what my wardrobe lacks in pants, it more than makes up for in bags. Naturally, a good chunk of these are beach bags, since summer’s my fave! Whether you’re a beach bum or planning to spend plenty of time poolside this summer, a cute, roomy tote that can hold all your essentials is a necessity. Here are twelve stylish options that fit the bill.

Which one would you pick? #1 and #3 are my favorites – I love those bright colors. Though I could also use a classic like #11 (a total steal at only $23)!
