Summer To-Do List

What's on your summer to-do list?

When summer arrives in Seattle, it puts everyone in a good mood. We may deal with perma-drizzle and grey skies the rest of the year, but our summers are pure bliss. For that reason and so many others, this time of year has always been my favorite. Besides sitting outside and soaking up the sunshine for the next three months straight (which sounds like a pretty solid plan, actually), here are a few of the things I can’t wait to do this season.

1. Wear bold, vibrant lip colors. NARS Heat Wave, how I’ve missed you!

2. Find the perfect little white sundress

3. Make rosé slushies

4. Get my Shark Week fix, perhaps with some themed snacks

5. Take off on a weekend road trip

6. Dine al fresco as much as possible (rooftop deck at Terra Plata, I’m coming for you!)

7. Read a book (or four) on the beach

8. Attend the Bite of Seattle (Jules and I missed it last year because we were meeting Emily Schuman! Worth it.)

9. Master the art of self-tanning (has anyone tried these?)

10. Get in the water. Lake, pool, backyard sprinklers…it’s all good!

Get wet!

Obviously there’s so much more (making s’mores, watching the fireworks on the 4th of July…) but these are just some of the highlights.

What are you looking forward to this season? Do you have any special summer traditions?

What We’re Reading: The Beach Edition

Four books we can't wait to read on the beach this summer

‘Tis the season to lounge on the beach, binge-reading to your heart’s content! From modern chick lit to engrossing psychological thrillers, there are a ton of titles calling my name right now. Here are four books I can’t wait to read this summer.

1. An insightful look at the highs and lows of a complex, decades-long friendship, Rich and Pretty follows two childhood best friends in New York City who are struggling to maintain their bond as they enter their thirties and life pulls them in different directions.

2. Described as an “unholy hybrid of Beaches and The Exorcist” and a “heartwarming tale of friendship and demonic possession,” My Best Friend’s Exorcism won me over immediately based on the back cover alone. High school drama, dark humor, and supernatural thrills make an excellent combo!

3. I know, I know, The Girls is on everybody’s summer must-read list. But I started it yesterday, and just as the Manson-like cult in the book seduces 14-year-old Evie, Emma Cline’s debut novel is totally reeling me in.

4. Teo Avelar is not your average medical student. For one thing, his only friend is a cadaver. And when he falls in love with Clarice, Teo kidnaps her and embarks on a road trip across Brazil in a misguided (and terrifying) effort to convince her they belong together. Part macabre thriller, part demented love story, Perfect Days sounds utterly compelling.

What’s on your reading list this summer? Any suggestions for a great beach book? I’d love to hear your recommendations!

Friday Favorites

TGIF, you guys! It’s been a hectic week and I feel like my brain is at full capacity lately…between that and this chilly, damp weather we’ve been having in Seattle, I’m in a bit of an early summer funk. I may be in desperate need of a vacation (or a super long nap/light coma). Anyway, I hope you have something relaxing planned for the weekend! But first, let’s unwind with a few fun links.

Interview with the founders of theSkimm, coconut popsicles, Seattle city guide, an app that shuts down creeps on Tinder, and your ultimate beach bucket list

1. In this interview, the founders of theSkimm discuss finding your voice, going viral, and their journey from dreamers to full-fledged businesswomen. (The Coveteur)

2. These sweet & creamy coconut popsicles are basically summer on a stick. (Style Me Pretty)

3. Ladies, there are SO many creepers in the world. This new app is designed to help you fend off the worst of ’em. (Refinery29)

4. This city guide reads like a love letter to Seattle, and it’s inspiring me to do some exploration in my own backyard. How have I never heard of Neon Taco? (Cup of Jo)

5. If you agree that every getaway should include sunshine and sand, say hello to your ultimate beach vacation bucket list. (PureWow)

Bonus: I love the message of Together Women Can, a public awareness campaign encouraging women to support each other in the workplace as peers, mentors, and friends. (Lean In)

Have a fabulous weekend!

How to Work From Home Like a Boss

How to master the art of working from home

Before I started my current job, I hated the idea of working from home. I love being around people, and the thought of being isolated all day made me sad; plus, I didn’t want to taint my home with the stress of work. But in the past year and a half, I’ve totally changed my mind. These days, most of my meetings are on Skype (so going to the office doesn’t necessarily mean I’ll see much of my co-workers), and I’m fortunate to have a job I love that isn’t super stressful on a day-to-day basis. I typically work from home four days a week, and I’ve got it down to a fine art. Here’s what you need to do to make it awesome.

Get comfy. There are people out there who will tell you that you need to put on your biz casual best in order to really get into the workday mindset. I am not those people. I don’t know about you, but I do my best work when I’m relaxed! Obviously, this means staying in my PJs all day. (At least until I have to go out to grab lunch. But you better believe I put them back on the second I get home.)

Use a dedicated workspace. Your home may not be large enough for a true office (mine sure isn’t), but trust me, you can make room for a well-appointed desk. Having a spot that’s reserved solely for getting shit done will make ALL the difference – and it’ll keep you off the couch and away from the rabbit hole that is Netflix.

Caffeine is a must.

Create the environment you need. I prefer some white noise while I work, so I usually play music or turn on the TV – but it has to be something that easily fades into the background, like HGTV or reruns of Friends that I’ve seen a million times. If you know you can’t focus without caffeine, invest in a coffee maker (or keep the fridge stocked with cold brew). If you work best with another person sitting next to you (studies show this can be a very effective motivator!), schedule work dates with a friend who also works remotely.

Be a multitasking machine. Probably the best thing about working from home is the massive amounts of time saved. Not having to commute (or even get dressed) in the morning means a substantial amount of extra sleep time, which is glorious. But I also get a lot done at home during the day that I wouldn’t be able to do at the office, like editing blog photos on my lunch break or folding laundry while I’m on a conference call. Score!

Know when it's time for happy hour

Know when to walk away. Conversely, the toughest thing about working from home is unplugging at the end of the day; it can be hard to disconnect when there’s no real separation between home and office. It helps to schedule something that will force you to step away from your desk, whether it’s happy hour with a friend, a yoga class, or just an alarm on your phone reminding you to hit up the grocery store. This also goes for breaks during the day – try to get outside, even if it’s just to walk down the block and feel the sun on your face!

For those of you who also work from home, do you love it or hate it? Any advice to share? I’d love to hear what you think!
